Enigm is a London-based Japanese street artist, printmaker. He also calls himself as Street Surrealist, Urban Surrealist.
He started into graffiti when he was teenager in Tokyo, and later discovered that his interest is in creation than vandalism, then started into painting on murals.
Thus, his artistic practice is entirely self-taught.
Murals and ink drawings on paper are mainly done by taking cross-hatching approach with very simple colour palettes to create engraving, Victorian prints-like world.
He has a classical, illustrative atmosphere and quality.
Also he mentioned that the reason of the obsession for the western classical themes is because growing up with neon lights and new technology in Tokyo is an opposite experience than that.
Another biggest influence to him is Surrealism movement thus to bring Surrealism on the streets is the main concept for murals.
Elements Enigm uses are never being abstract or things from another world, but things that clearly identifiable as what it is. However things are constructed, combined oddly. Those unexpected elements are aimed audiences to do a double-take and lead them to the deep thoughts.
His canvas works are done by basically fundamental oil technic rather than engraving illustration. He describes his canvas works as colored, more complex versions of expression.
However regardless of different technics, his aim is absolutely consistent, showing something that does not make sense at all, and showing contradiction is what he believes as one of the most important role of art works.
